Not only that, but it’s highly likely aircraft noise will worsen as airport usage in the UK expands, with the planned introduction of commercial drones.

Fact 2: All aircraft create noise and emit toxic carbon pollutants. Too much noise and a too bigger concentration of toxic air pollutants has serious health issues in terms of our sleep deprivation and air quality. In the UK we have Environmental and Noise regulations i.e. laws, which are designed to control both noise and air quality created by our; industries, SMEs businesses and also our neighbours. HOWEVER, the Aviation sector has exemptions from the regulation.

Fact 3: The result of these exemptions means our local and district councils aren’t officially allowed to directly report or comment on Aircraft nuisance, i.e. it’s not a property Search consideration. This Website is designed to plug that gap and provide everyone with a shared understanding by providing access to our 2 Minute Aircraft Assessment.
There are two distinct types of aircraft noise that affect the majority of people. The first type is a roar that typically occurs within 2-4 miles around an airport and is often associated with planes taking-off. However this type of noise is going to be obvious to detect when visiting the local area as the planes will be very visible, often below 5k feet.

The second type of noise is what we term as a constant whine or droning sound that can occur anywhere within UK airspace. However, some UK postcodes are much more exposed than others as you will see from the information provided on this website.

Our Aircraft Noise Facts, Figures and Assessments website is designed to help you make an informed decision about the postcodes that meet your noise nuisance criteria. The raw aircraft movement data used by our Assessment algorithms is kindly provided by the Opensky Network Org. which is an Open Data aircraft research community whose stakeholders and sponsors includes the likes of Oxford University and EuroControl.

Our approach to aircraft noise monitoring doesn’t rely on expensive, passive analogue monitoring stations that often require planning and approval by the aviation industry. Instead we use dynamic algorithms and real aircraft movement “open data” to create virtual aircraft noise monitor stations. This provides us with the flexibility, affordability and mobility required, without any need for planning.

We passionately believe we have the right to know the consequences of the Aviation sector’s actions within our airspace, the airspace in which we share, breathe and bring up our families.

It’s also a fact our small UK island is the home to one of world’s most densely and largest aviation networks, based on land mass, and it’s growing. Growth has implications on our UK cities, towns and villages when deciding where we live, work, holiday or retire to.

Our 31 Day Interactive aircraft traffic maps enables you to perform your own aircraft assessment too, on your own postcode The filters provide analysis of flight movements by; aircraft, altitude, day, aircraft movement type, and time bands such as late evening and early morning

It is our intention for the aircraft models and algorithms to provide sufficient information to determine the experience you should expect both at night-time and during the day within your selected postcode. The fees collected help cover the compute operating costs of running this non profit making service and also the free content contained in this Website. Every Assessment processes 400,000+ data points from datasets containing billions of aircraft movements.

So what do we mean by being Overflown?

Being overflown means an aircraft flying within 1 mile radius of your home or postcode, either inbound or outbound, from ANY airport. Our research shows that people living 30-50 miles from an airport are often more overflown that those living 3-6 miles from an airport. Why? The real life image below illustrates why. This was a single inbound Gatwick flight that overflew multiple postcode between 5:00am and 6:00am. Now extrapolate this scenario by the 1000s of flights that criss-cross the UK everyday and you will understand how flights can impact you.

The following is another example of a single flight Overflying multiple postcodes ranging at a height from 4,000 feet to 15,000 feet with sometimes less and 90 seconds separation between flights. Meaning we buy and rent our homes and also visit our open spaces without any understanding of potential noise and emissions created by the aircraft being routed overhead. Buying and renting are expensive in terms of emotional and financial costs so try and avoid getting trapped into a situation you had not expected.

Is it all about the decibels? We think not as the aircraft cruising noise, excluding maneuvers, tends to be around 45-55 dBs, which is about the same as a car. However, the noise duration is typically 30-50 seconds i.e. it’s not a single short term event, and this is what can causes an annoyance. Additionally, the noise created at 1,000 feet and above is not readily absorbed by trees and buildings and can merge with noise coming from other nearby aircraft. This in turn creates a continuous low level background rumble.

What emissions? Whenever you hear aircraft noise there are very likely to be emissions too. By having an understanding of aircraft movement and how long it takes for an aircraft to cross the postcode’s airspace it is then possible to calculate the scale of the emissions. Emissions such as; Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxide and Particulate Matter such as soot. It’s estimated that an aircraft emits 250kg of Carbon Dioxide per hour. Meaning, 2 planes navigating the same postcode at the same time for 20 seconds will emit; 2.78kg of Carbon Dioxide, 14.30 milligrams of Nitrogen Oxide and 1.84 milligrams of Particulate Matter.

Our focus is on identifying the potential causes of continuous noise disturbances and emissions at the times when we are at our most sensitive e.g. early morning, late at night and at weekends.

The Assessment processes billions of “research quality” data points and is a fusion of multi-million £s of IT investment overlaid by real life experiences.
