The following is a comparison between two Aircraft Traffic Assessments, one based on 2016 data points the other based on 2019 data points. Data prior to 2016 was not available for analysis.
Findings
- There has been no change in the Aircraft Disruption Band which is Extremely High i.e. Sound equates to a busy Motorway i.e. very regular traffic that will be noticeable at peak times which includes evenings and weekends. Location is on a flight path or primary flight corridor and subject to Arrivals. At times there will be multiple aircraft occurrences within the same hour, typically between 15 to 20.
- The number of daily disruptions* has slightly fallen from 263 to 228 although the index value has increased from 46.87 to 49.85. The reason for this is an increase in flight density, i.e. the number of aircraft sharing the airspace within the same hour, and is due to the increase in number of occurrences of 9+ and 15+ flights per hour. The flights per hour measures include all flights below 26,000 feet and can originate from any airport such as the regional airports i.e. the area is subject to being “overflown”. This is managed by NATS.
- In 2019 the Assessment has identified the existence of circling planes i.e. a flight holding stack? This will mean the planes will remain in the airspace longer. The circling planes might have originated from any of the local regional airports too.
See our article about the disruption index . At this time the index does not take into consideration the mix of aircraft types. The very large aircraft such as the A380-800 tend to create an air disturbance that is noticeable from inside the house. The larger planes also tend to fly lower, have more volume and therefore have a greater visual impact.
